Assertion:
We should be working towards the impeachment of the president.

Essay and/or background: There been a lot of argument in the blogosphere about this lately. It has not been so much on whether impeachment is deserved, which is my assertion's top support (by the way, click on the 'Focus' link under a given post to see its supports, can be easy to miss) -- most people who bother discussing impeachment at all seem to agree it is deserved. Rather, differences are on whether impeachment is a practical and a worthwhile goal to put effort towards. I believe it is, for the reasons I lay out and support below. I also try to anticipate some counterarguments below (if you see a > on the left side of a post, click it to expand the counterarguments below). A lot of people I respect disagree with my stand, but hopefully we can lay out all the issues in one place. There are numerous places where the issue has been discussed recently. I paste just one of the most recent URLs below, as it has an interesting poll of DailyKos members and their comments pro/con.

The top point in support right now is, "we have no higher calling than restoring the constitution"

There are numerous things to focus on, like ending the war in Iraq, healthcare, etc. Things that effect everyone.

The president has committed high crimes deserving of impeachment.

Even so, just because he may deserve it doesn't mean we should make that our priority.

yes, but it is not practical. We do not have anywhere near the votes, nor the public will to inspire votes.

It is the best way to prevent more damage from this crew, like a war with Iran or some other madness.

the spector of impeachment may actually provoke more madness, as they'll feel cornered and have nothing to lose
