Assertion:
The U.S. House should pass a resolution recognizing the Armenian genocide.

Essay and/or background: Over 1 million Armenians were killed in the Ottoman Empire in 1915-1918. Turkey, the main successor to the Ottoman Empire, denies any state sponsored genocide occurred and in partly in response to this, many have pushed for recognition of the event by foreign governments. The U.S., despite Turkish complaints, should joint them. On Oct. 10, 2007, The House Committee on Foreign Affairs approved US House Resolution 106 condemning the Ottoman Empire for the genocide. The bill should be brought up for a vote in front of the full House and passed. As Speaker Pelosi said, "While that may have been a long time ago, genocide is taking place now in Darfur, it did within recent memory in Rwanda, so as long as there is genocide there is need to speak out against it."

There has been attention given this (and other genocides in history), but even now little action is being taken on the situation in Darfur for example

40 U.S. states have already passed similar resolutions, so the national government will just be following the lead.

States aren't responsible for international relations. The Congress is. It needs to consider what's in the national interest -- angering Turkey isn't.

It wasn't any of the states' business to do that either.
